Agentic analytics and BI platform where Spotter agents answer data questions, build semantic models and dashboards
ThoughtSpot is an analytics and BI platform for enterprises that want business users to query governed data in plain language through its Spotter AI agents. It connects live to Snowflake, Databricks and Redshift, and adds agents that build semantic models, dashboards and embedded-analytics code for data teams.
ThoughtSpot, founded in 2012 and based in Mountain View, California, started as a search-based analytics tool and now sells itself as an agentic analytics platform. Its core agent, Spotter, launched in November 2024 to answer natural-language questions over live cloud data warehouses, and a September 2025 release extended it to unstructured text and images. In December 2025 ThoughtSpot announced Spotter 3, which checks its own answers and supports Python, forecasting and follow-up analysis, plus three role agents: SpotterModel builds semantic models from prompts, SpotterViz builds Liveboard dashboards from descriptions, and SpotterCode writes ThoughtSpot Embedded code inside Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and VS Code. These rolled out through early 2026, followed by Spotter for Industries in March, Spotter Semantics as a governed semantic layer, an MCP server so outside agents can query ThoughtSpot, and a June 2026 integration with Snowflake Cortex AI and Semantic Views. Gartner placed ThoughtSpot in the Leaders quadrant of its 2026 Magic Quadrant for Analytics and BI Platforms. Customers named by the company include Unilever, Lyft, Intuitive Surgical, Ecolab and Booking.com, and it reports more than 35 customers paying over $1 million a year. ThoughtSpot has raised $674 million, most recently a $100 million Series F in November 2021 at a $4.2 billion valuation. Constellation Research's Michael Ni says it leads most BI vendors on workflow automation but trails hyperscalers in breadth.

Key Features
- ✓Spotter agent
Conversational analytics agent that answers plain-language questions over live warehouse data, checks its own answers and runs follow-up analysis, forecasting and Python.
- ✓SpotterModel
Builds and maintains semantic data models from natural-language prompts, including table selection, schema definition and joins on Snowflake, Databricks and dbt.
- ✓SpotterViz
Liveboard agent that lays out, styles and publishes dashboards from a description, reducing the analyst time spent on dashboard maintenance.
- ✓SpotterCode
AI pair programmer that generates ThoughtSpot Embedded code inside Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and VS Code to speed up embedded analytics builds.
- ✓Agentic MCP Server
Exposes ThoughtSpot analytics to custom and third-party AI agents through the Model Context Protocol, so governed metrics can be reused outside the BI interface.
- ✓Enterprise governance
SAML, OAuth and OIDC single sign-on, row-level security, data isolation and multi-tenant orgs, backed by SOC 2, ISO 27001 and HIPAA programs.
Capabilities
Use Cases
- •Self-service business questions
Sales, finance or operations staff ask Spotter questions in plain English against the warehouse and get charts without filing a ticket with the data team.
- •Semantic model build-out
Data engineers use SpotterModel to generate joins and definitions from prompts, shortening the modeling work that usually blocks natural-language search accuracy.
- •Embedded customer-facing analytics
A SaaS vendor embeds ThoughtSpot dashboards and Spotter in its product, using SpotterCode and the SDK to cut integration time.
- •Agent access to governed metrics
An enterprise AI team connects its own agents to the ThoughtSpot MCP server so they pull consistent, permissioned metrics instead of raw tables.
Ideal For
Best For
- ✓Self-service natural-language analytics for business users on a governed cloud data warehouse
- ✓Data teams that want AI help building semantic models and dashboards
- ✓SaaS companies embedding analytics and a conversational agent into their own product
- ✓Enterprises that want external AI agents to query governed metrics through an MCP server
- ✓Snowflake-centric shops using Cortex AI and Semantic Views
Not Ideal For
- ✗Small teams on a tight budget; user-based tiers start at $25 per user per month and Hacker News practitioners describe enterprise deals as six-figure
- ✗Organizations without a clean, modeled data warehouse, since answer quality depends on the semantic layer being set up well
- ✗Heavy Spotter users on user-based plans, which cap Spotter at 25 queries per user per month unless an unlimited add-on is bought
- ✗Companies already standardized on Microsoft Power BI with Copilot that only need light natural-language query

Market Analysis
Pros
- ✓Named a Leader in Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant for Analytics and BI Platforms
- ✓Constellation Research says it is ahead of most BI vendors in full-workflow automation
- ✓Published entry pricing and a free embedded developer tier
- ✓Broad compliance coverage: SOC 1/2/3, ISO 27001, CSA STAR, HIPAA and GDPR
Cons
- ✗Constellation Research says it still trails hyperscalers in breadth and some analytics vendors in depth
- ✗Analyst Donald Farmer says ThoughtSpot has struggled to land its agentic story in the market
- ✗Natural-language accuracy depends on semantic modeling work; Hacker News commenters mention hand-coding synonyms, and a 2026 podcast recap says its 2019 BERT-based search hit only about 50% accuracy before the rebuild
- ✗Spotter is capped at 25 queries per user per month on user-based tiers
- ✗Hacker News practitioners describe deals in the six-figure range and earlier deployments as hard to scale down

ThoughtSpot publishes entry prices: $25 per user per month for Essentials and $50 for Pro, billed annually, or $0.10 per credit on usage-based Pro. User-based plans cap Spotter at 25 queries per user per month, with unlimited Spotter sold as an add-on. ThoughtSpot says it does not charge for LLM tokens, though a bring-your-own model provider bills separately. Enterprise and embedded production pricing is quote-only.
