Itential FlowAI is an agentic operations layer that lets infrastructure teams build, deploy and govern AI agents which reason about network and cloud state but execute every action through Itential's controlled, audited automation engine. It is built for network, cloud and platform engineering teams that need agents safe enough to run in production.
Itential made FlowAI generally available on July 1, 2026, announcing it at Cisco Live US 2026 after a six-month validation period through the FlowAI Innovation Program with Lumen Communications and five other enterprises across telecom, financial services and utilities. FlowAI's core premise, in the words of Itential co-founder and CTO Chris Wade, is that 'AI agents cannot succeed in production without deterministic execution and governance': agents get the reasoning flexibility to work through an infrastructure goal using contextual network data, but never touch infrastructure directly. Instead, every action routes through Itential's execution engine with RBAC, approval gates and automated audit trails. The product ships three components — FlowAgents, task-oriented reasoning agents that pursue goals through governed workflows with full reasoning traces preserved for audit; FlowAgent Builder, where teams define an agent's purpose, reasoning style, exact tool scope and autonomy thresholds before it ever runs; and FlowMCP Gateway, which extends the same governance and policy enforcement to external MCP services. Governance is layered three ways: who can build agents, what fixed tool scope each agent has, and who can trigger agents under what conditions, so agents cannot self-escalate beyond what was defined at build time. Agents run a ReAct-style observe-reason-act-observe loop and can call existing investments — Ansible playbooks, Python scripts, OpenTofu plans, ServiceNow, NetBox and any MCP-compatible tool — as governed tools, while the open-sourced Itential MCP Server lets external LLMs such as Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini invoke platform workflows. Lumen reported that its teams were 'building production-ready agents in minutes within existing governance controls,' collapsing weeks of specification and scripting into hours.
