HackerRank Chakra
by HackerRank
AI interviewer that runs hands-on technical interviews and scores how candidates work with AI
HackerRank Chakra is an AI interviewer that runs structured voice and video technical interviews in a live coding environment and returns evidence-backed scorecards. It is for engineering and talent-acquisition leaders who want to replace the recruiter screen, take-home test and engineer follow-up with one session that also measures a candidate's AI fluency.
Chakra is HackerRank's agentic AI interviewer, made generally available to HackerRank customers in early October 2026 after roughly six months in beta, during which it ran more than 500,000 interviews for early testers including Snowflake, Snorkel and Capgemini. A hiring team configures the role, competencies and rubric through a chat interface, then invites candidates by email, link or an ATS integration. In the session, Chakra spins up a canvas with a real-world problem, often in an actual code repository, with an AI assistant available to the candidate. It watches how the candidate works and asks adaptive follow-up questions, for example why they chose an approach or how the solution changes under a new constraint. HackerRank says this one session replaces three earlier rounds: the recruiter screen, the take-home assessment and the engineer follow-up. Scoring covers problem-solving, judgment, communication and what HackerRank calls AI fluency: framing a task for an AI, assessing its output and steering it to a useful result. Reports give competency scores, strengths and gaps, citations to transcript and work samples, and session replay. Integrity monitoring flags unauthorised apps such as Cluely, multiple faces and external devices; HackerRank reports 70% to 80% fewer suspicious-activity flags than its traditional assessments. Supported role templates include AI engineer, forward deployed engineer, ML engineer, AI product manager and GTM engineer. HackerRank states Chakra is SOC 2 certified, supports SSO/SAML, never trains on candidate data and has third-party bias audits for NYC Local Law 144. Humans make the final hiring decision. Pricing is not published.
A head of talent acquisition or engineering hiring manager at a company running high volumes of technical interviews, who needs to measure how candidates work with AI tools rather than whether they can recall algorithms.
One AI-run session with an auditable scorecard in place of a recruiter screen, take-home test and engineer follow-up, freeing engineer interview hours.

Key Features
- ✓Agentic live-coding interviews
Chakra spins up a real-world problem in a working environment and watches the candidate solve it, so it scores process as well as the final answer.
- ✓Adaptive follow-up questioning
The interviewer asks context-specific questions about choices and changed constraints, probing judgment the way a human engineer would in a follow-up round.
- ✓AI fluency scoring
Measures how well a candidate frames a task for an AI assistant, evaluates its output and steers it, a skill traditional coding tests cannot see.
- ✓Evidence-backed scorecards
Reports include competency scores, strengths and gaps, citations to transcript and work samples, and session replay, so hiring managers can check every rating.
- ✓Integrity monitoring
Detects unauthorised assistance tools such as Cluely, multiple faces and external devices, which HackerRank says cut suspicious-activity flags by 70% to 80%.
- ✓ATS integrations and Chakra MCP
Connects directly to popular applicant tracking systems and offers an MCP server, so invitations and results flow into existing recruiting workflows.
Capabilities
Use Cases
- •Replacing the first three interview rounds
Collapse the recruiter screen, take-home assessment and engineer follow-up into a single AI-led session, shortening time to a hiring decision.
- •Hiring AI-native engineers
Use role templates for AI engineers and forward deployed engineers to see how candidates direct AI tools on a real repository before an onsite.
- •Defensible hiring records
Keep transcript-cited scorecards and replays for each candidate so hiring decisions can be reviewed and audited under rules like NYC Local Law 144.
- •Reducing interview fraud
Screen remote candidates with integrity checks that flag hidden AI tools, extra faces and second devices, lowering the risk of hiring someone who cheated.
Ideal For
Best For
- ✓High-volume screening for AI engineer, ML engineer and forward deployed engineer roles
- ✓Assessing AI fluency: how well a candidate prompts, checks and corrects an AI assistant on a real task
- ✓Cutting engineer hours spent on first-round technical interviews
- ✓Teams that need auditable, evidence-cited interview records for regulated hiring such as NYC Local Law 144
Not Ideal For
- ✗Teams that need independent proof that interview scores predict on-the-job performance, since HackerRank has not published validation beyond its own claims
- ✗Organisations or jurisdictions wary of webcam and screen monitoring of candidates, because integrity checks analyse webcam images and screen activity
- ✗Small companies hiring a handful of engineers a year, who are unlikely to recover the cost of an enterprise contract with unpublished pricing

Market Analysis
Pros
- ✓Replaces three interview rounds with one session, saving engineer interview time
- ✓Evaluates how candidates work with AI, which matches how engineering work is now done
- ✓Compliance features are built in: SOC 2, SSO/SAML, no training on candidate data and NYC Local Law 144 bias audits
- ✓Named users include Clay, Replit, DoorDash, Atlassian, Wayfair and Cerebras
Cons
- ✗No independent evidence yet that Chakra scores predict job performance or treat candidate groups consistently; fairness claims are HackerRank's own
- ✗HackerRank has not clarified whether the 500,000 beta interviews count unique candidates, completed sessions or attempts
- ✗Monitoring collects webcam images and screen activity, which raises privacy and candidate-experience concerns
- ✗Hacker News practitioners note that AI-era hiring evaluations depend on tools and models that change month to month, so rubrics can date quickly
- ✗Pricing is unpublished, which makes it hard to compare against per-interview alternatives

HackerRank does not publish Chakra pricing; the product page and launch coverage list none. HackerRank's broader assessment platform is sold in Starter, Pro and custom Enterprise tiers metered by candidate attempts, but third-party pricing guides disagree on list prices (one 2026 guide cites $100/month Starter and $450/month Pro billed annually), so expect a quote-based contract for Chakra.
