ICSE 2028 — 50th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Software Engineering
by IEEE Computer Society and ACM SIGSOFT
Software engineering's golden-anniversary edition — 50th ICSE, Hawaii
About This Event
ICSE 2028, the 50th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Software Engineering, runs 30 April to 6 May 2028 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village in Waikoloa Village, Hawaii, with Rick Kazman of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa as general chair. ICSE is the premier software engineering research conference and this is its golden-anniversary edition. Its structure is an umbrella week: a main Research Track alongside Software Engineering in Practice, New Ideas and Emerging Results, education and society tracks, tool demonstrations, formal artifact evaluation and a doctoral symposium, plus a set of co-hosted conferences and dozens of workshops. AI for software engineering now runs through most of the programme, including the co-hosted FORGE conference on AI foundation models and software engineering and CAIN on AI engineering.

Topics & Focus Areas
Who Should Attend
- ✓VPs of Engineering and heads of developer productivity
- ✓Software engineering researchers and academics
- ✓Platform and developer-tooling teams
- ✓Engineering managers evaluating AI coding assistants
- ✓Quality, testing and reliability leads
- ✓PhD students and new faculty in software engineering
Why Attend
Almost every claim a vendor makes about AI coding assistants — acceptance rates, defect density, review burden, long-term maintenance cost — traces back to work published here or at its co-hosted conferences. A VP of Engineering or head of developer productivity comes away with the measured evidence rather than the marketing version, plus direct access to the researchers who ran those studies. The co-hosted FORGE and CAIN conferences are specifically about foundation models in software engineering and about engineering AI systems, which is where the practical questions on coding agents, verification and technical debt are actually being answered.
Event Features
- ✓Main Research Track — the field's flagship peer-reviewed venue
- ✓Software Engineering in Practice (SEIP) — industrial experience papers
- ✓New Ideas and Emerging Results (NIER) and Journal-First paper tracks
- ✓FORGE, the co-hosted conference on AI Foundation Models and Software Engineering
- ✓CAIN (AI Engineering), MSR (Mining Software Repositories) and ICPC among the recurring co-hosted conferences
- ✓Tool Demonstrations, Data Showcase and formal Artifact Evaluation
- ✓Doctoral Symposium, New Faculty Symposium and the ACM Student Research Competition
- ✓A large associated workshop programme; recent editions have included LLMSC, AGENTVERIFY, ReCode and IDE
What Makes This Unique
- ★The 50th edition — ICSE's golden anniversary, and its first time in Hawaii
- ★The field's top-ranked software engineering venue: what is accepted here becomes the evidence base that tool vendors later cite
- ★An umbrella week — co-hosted conferences and a large workshop programme run alongside the main track, including FORGE on AI foundation models and software engineering
- ★From ICSE 2027 onwards the research track moved to a single summer submission cycle, so the 2028 programme is drawn from one deadline rather than two
