About This Event

The 37th British Machine Vision Conference runs 23–26 November 2026 at Lancaster Town Hall in Lancaster, UK, hosted by Lancaster University and organised by the British Machine Vision Association and Society for Pattern Recognition. BMVC is the UK's flagship computer vision meeting and has published proceedings annually since 1990, most recently in Sheffield (2025), Glasgow (2024), Aberdeen (2023) and London (2022). Papers run to 14 pages excluding references, are reviewed double-blind by at least three reviewers with an area chair meta-review and a formal author rebuttal, and span 23 subject areas from 3D and shape modelling to action and video understanding, medical image analysis, multimodal vision-and-language learning and a Brave New Ideas track for work that is not chasing benchmark gains. The 2024 edition accepted 264 of 1,020 submissions, a 25.9% rate. Top BMVC 2026 papers are invited to submit extended versions to a special issue of the International Journal of Computer Vision, and the BMVA plans the event around roughly 500 attendees.

Who Should Attend

  • Computer vision researchers
  • Machine learning engineers
  • PhD students and postdocs
  • Applied research leads in industry
  • Heads of AI/ML research
  • Medical imaging and diagnostics teams

Why Attend

This is a research conference, and the honest answer for a CTO is to send the team rather than attend personally. For an applied-ML or computer-vision group it is the highest-signal-per-pound event in the UK calendar: roughly 500 attendees against a quarter acceptance rate means the poster hall is genuinely readable in a day, the authors are standing next to their work, and the 23 subject areas map cleanly onto production problems — video understanding, medical imaging, multimodal retrieval, 3D reconstruction. Research leads leave with a shortlist of methods worth piloting and a hiring pipeline of UK and European PhD candidates.

Event Features

  • Main technical programme across 23 declared subject areas
  • Brave New Ideas track for novel approaches and theories that are not benchmark-driven
  • Workshops day (separate call, proposals closed 5 June 2026)
  • Doctoral Consortium for PhD researchers, with its own submission window
  • Poster and video submission programme running to 30 October 2026
  • Author rebuttal stage between review release and paper decisions
  • IJCV special issue invitation for top-rated papers

What Makes This Unique

  • Selective by design — 264 of 1,020 submissions accepted in 2024 (25.9%), against a 42.7% average across the 1992–2024 record
  • Top papers are invited to extended versions in a special issue of the International Journal of Computer Vision
  • Full academic review machinery for a mid-size venue: three-plus reviewers, an area chair meta-review, and a week-long author rebuttal window
  • Run by the BMVA as a non-profit community conference, deliberately kept near 500 attendees rather than scaled to CVPR size
  • 37 consecutive editions with open proceedings from 1990 onward, and authors retain copyright in their own papers
