Devin is Cognition's autonomous coding agent: you hand it a ticket, spec or Slack request and it plans, writes, tests and opens pull requests in your codebase. It runs as parallel cloud agents, a desktop IDE (formerly Windsurf) and a CLI, and is aimed at engineering organizations that want to delegate whole tasks.
Devin is the coding agent built by Cognition, a San Francisco company founded in August 2023 by Scott Wu, Steven Hao and Walden Yan. Cognition demoed Devin in March 2024 as an AI that performs the tasks of a software engineer. In July 2025 it acquired Windsurf, the agentic IDE, after Google hired away Windsurf's CEO and senior staff, and in June 2026 Windsurf was rebranded Devin Desktop. Devin now spans three surfaces: Devin Cloud for delegating work to parallel cloud agents, Devin Desktop for iterative work in an IDE with inline edits and tab completion, and a CLI. Developers can also tag @Devin in Slack or Microsoft Teams and start tasks from GitHub, Linear, Jira or a Confluence spec page. It routes work across frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google alongside Cognition's own SWE-2 model, and claims frontier performance for up to 60% less cost by mixing models. Logos on the site include Citi, Mercedes, NVIDIA, AT&T, Cloudflare, Lowe's, Wayfair and Elevance Health. The business has grown fast: TechCrunch reported a $1B raise at $26B post-money in May 2026 and a $2B round at $48B in September 2026, led by Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, Founders Fund, General Catalyst and Avenir, on a $900M annualized revenue run rate. Its main competitors are Cursor, GitHub Copilot's coding agent, OpenAI Codex and Claude Code. Cognition's own security docs tell customers to keep code review and branch protection on, because Devin can still hallucinate or introduce insecure code.
