Long-horizon AI agents for chip design and engineering simulation, built on the Synopsys Autopilot Platform
Synopsys AgentEngineer is a portfolio of domain-specific, long-horizon AI agents that plan and execute multi-step semiconductor and systems engineering workflows on the new Synopsys Autopilot Platform. It is for chip and systems engineering organisations that want verification, implementation and simulation work to run with far less manual effort.
Synopsys AgentEngineer, announced September 28, 2026, is a portfolio of domain-specific long-horizon agents from the Sunnyvale-based electronic design automation leader, built on a new foundation called the Synopsys Autopilot Platform. The agents are designed to reason, plan and execute engineering workflows across the silicon-to-systems lifecycle in six domains: verification, system validation, implementation, analog and mixed-signal design, manufacturing (mask synthesis) and simulation and analysis, the last drawing on the Ansys simulation business Synopsys completed acquiring in July 2025, with combustion, resonance and signal-integrity agents. Task-level agents cover coverage closure, software bring-up, 3DIC assembly, PPA optimisation, analog layout synthesis, design migration and mask synthesis. Autopilot supplies orchestration, skills, memory, telemetry and governance; it grounds agents in Synopsys' EDA and simulation ground-truth engines through privileged APIs, which Synopsys says yields 2x better token efficiency and lower latency. The platform is built for optionality — customers can use Synopsys, partner or third-party models, infrastructure and agents — and integrates NVIDIA's Agent Toolkit, Nemotron models and the OpenShell secure runtime, with access controls, encryption and runtime guardrails for IP protection. Synopsys reports more than 50 customer engagements, quotes from Intel, TSMC, Samsung, MediaTek, Fujitsu, NVIDIA and AheadComputing, and results of up to 50x faster verification closure and 10-30% faster RTL generation at Fujitsu. General availability is planned for the end of 2026; pricing is not disclosed.

Key Features
- ✓Long-horizon domain agents
Agents plan and execute multi-step workflows such as coverage closure end to end, instead of assisting one prompt at a time.
- ✓Autopilot Platform
A shared foundation providing orchestration, skills, memory, telemetry and governance so agents across domains run on common infrastructure.
- ✓Engine-grounded context
Privileged APIs into Synopsys EDA and simulation ground-truth engines supply context, which Synopsys says doubles token efficiency and lowers latency.
- ✓Model and infrastructure optionality
Customers can run Synopsys, partner or third-party models, tools and agents, including NVIDIA Nemotron and the NVIDIA Agent Toolkit.
- ✓IP protection controls
Access controls, encryption and runtime guardrails, including NVIDIA's policy-controlled OpenShell runtime, protect sensitive design IP from agent misuse.
- ✓Six-domain coverage
Verification, system validation, implementation, analog, manufacturing and simulation agents span the silicon-to-systems lifecycle in one portfolio.
Capabilities
Use Cases
- •Verification coverage closure
Agents iterate on stimulus and assertions until coverage targets are met, with Synopsys citing up to 50x faster closure in specific workflows.
- •RTL code generation and refactoring
Fujitsu reports a 10-30% productivity boost generating RTL and SystemVerilog assertions and refactoring code with the agents.
- •Analog layout synthesis
Analog and mixed-signal teams, including MediaTek, use agentic flows to speed layout and design productivity on custom circuits.
- •Power-integrity and simulation analysis
Simulation agents automate signal-integrity, resonance and combustion analysis, with TSMC citing acceleration of power-integrity analysis.
- •Software bring-up and system validation
Validation agents automate software bring-up on pre-silicon platforms, shortening the path from first silicon model to running software.
Ideal For
Best For
- ✓Verification teams chasing coverage closure on complex SoCs
- ✓Physical-implementation teams iterating on PPA optimisation and design migration
- ✓Analog and mixed-signal groups automating layout synthesis
- ✓Systems companies running Ansys-derived simulation such as signal integrity and resonance analysis
- ✓Organisations standardised on the Synopsys flow that want agents inside existing tools rather than a separate stack
Not Ideal For
- ✗Teams that need a generally available product today — GA is planned for the end of 2026
- ✗Design groups built primarily on Cadence or Siemens EDA flows, since the agents' advantage comes from Synopsys engines and privileged APIs
- ✗Buyers who need published pricing or independently audited results before engaging — neither exists yet

Market & Ratings
50+ customer engagements (Synopsys, Sep 2026)
Market Analysis
Pros
- ✓Named early users span Intel, TSMC, Samsung, MediaTek, Fujitsu and NVIDIA
- ✓Workflow-level autonomy across multi-step sequences rather than task-level copilots
- ✓Grounding in signoff-grade engines reduces hallucination risk on high-stakes verification work
Cons
- ✗Not generally available until the end of 2026, with 50+ engagements still to convert to production
- ✗Headline gains (50x, 20% coverage, 30% productivity) are vendor-reported and workflow-specific, and analysts advise evaluating each independently
- ✗Required human review before signoff, reproducibility and compute consumption are unspecified
- ✗Analysts flag auditable governance for high-stakes design decisions as still immature, and the open third-party ecosystem is unproven at scale
