Hex is an AI-native analytics platform that combines collaborative SQL/Python notebooks, a Notebook Agent, conversational Threads for business users and data apps in one workspace. Hex, founded in 2019 by former Palantir employees Barry McCardel, Caitlin Colgrove and Glen Takahashi, began as a browser-based collaborative notebook where Python, SQL and no-code cells live together and analyses can be published as interactive data apps. It has since become an agentic analytics platform. The Hex Agent (Notebook Agent) writes and edits analysis logic with awareness of warehouse schemas and project history; Threads, launched in October 2025, lets non-technical users ask data questions in plain language and escalate a thread into a notebook, and is reachable from Slack, Claude, Cursor and Codex; a Semantic Modeling Agent builds and validates metric definitions, and Hex joined the Open Semantic Interchange initiative for portability. Context Studio, launched January 28, 2026, gives data teams an observation dashboard of agent conversations with AI-extracted topics and confusion warnings, plus a workbench to stage, test and version-deploy endorsements, semantic models and workspace guides. 2026 releases added a CLI/API for the agent (July 30) and evals (August 4). Hex upgraded its primary model to Claude Sonnet 4.5 in its Fall 2025 launch, and says model providers do not train on customer data. It is SOC 2 Type II, supports Google/Okta/OIDC SSO, and offers single-tenant deployment in a chosen AWS region and a HIPAA add-on on Enterprise. Hex raised a $70M Series C in May 2025 from investors including Avra, a16z, Sequoia, Redpoint and Snowflake, reported 1,500+ teams, and lists customers such as Anthropic, Notion, Ramp, Reddit and Brex.
