About This Event

ICSME 2027, the 43rd International Conference on Software Maintenance and Evolution, runs 14-18 September 2027 in Toronto, Canada; the venue has not yet been named on the conference site. ICSME is the long-running international forum for software maintenance researchers and practitioners to examine the key issues facing the maintenance community — it began in 1983 as ICSM, the International Conference on Software Maintenance, and added 'Evolution' to its name in 2014 to reflect how much of the field is now about evolutionary change rather than repair. It deliberately mixes researchers, practitioners, tool developers, technology-transfer specialists and project managers. The 2027 edition opens thirteen tracks: Research Papers, Industry, Benchmark & Dataset, Registered Reports, Journal First, Tool Demonstration and Data Showcase, Visions and Emerging Results, Artifact Evaluation, Posters, Tutorials, Workshop and Panel, Doctoral Symposium and Student Volunteer. Individual track calls and submission deadlines have not been posted yet.

  • PhD students

Why Attend

Maintenance is where enterprise software budgets actually go, and it is exactly where AI coding assistants are now being pointed — at legacy migration, refactoring, and comprehension of code nobody on the current team wrote. ICSME's Benchmark & Dataset and Artifact Evaluation tracks are where those claims get independently reproduced instead of demoed, which makes the programme a practical filter for an engineering VP evaluating an AI modernisation vendor or building an internal one. The Industry Track puts practitioners on the same stage as the researchers, and Toronto keeps travel and visa friction low for North American and European teams.

Event Features

  • Research Papers Track — the main peer-reviewed programme
  • Industry Track for practitioner experience reports
  • Benchmark & Dataset Track
  • Registered Reports Track
  • Artifact Evaluation
  • Tool Demonstration and Data Showcase Track
  • Journal First Track
  • Visions and Emerging Results Track
  • Doctoral Symposium, tutorials, workshops, panels and posters

What Makes This Unique

  • Running since 1983 as ICSM — the oldest venue dedicated to existing code rather than greenfield development, which is where most enterprise engineering budget actually goes
  • A dedicated Benchmark & Dataset track plus formal Artifact Evaluation, so tool claims are reproduced by third parties rather than demonstrated on a stage
  • A Registered Reports track, where study designs are reviewed before results exist — a direct check on the positive-result bias that distorts AI-for-code evaluations
  • An Industry Track and a Tool Demonstration and Data Showcase alongside the research programme, so practitioners and researchers present in the same week
