About This Event

EMNLP 2026, the Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing, runs 24-29 October 2026 at Hungexpo in Budapest, Hungary, organised by SIGDAT, the Association for Computational Linguistics' special interest group for empirical NLP. It is one of the flagship venues in the field alongside ACL and NAACL, and it has grown steeply — EMNLP 2024 drew 6,395 submissions and accepted 2,379 papers. The 2026 programme spans 22 main-conference areas including language modelling, LLM agents, interpretability and analysis, efficient methods, information extraction and retrieval, multilinguality, ethics and bias, and speech, plus a dedicated Industry Track for deployed systems and a special theme track, 'New Missions for NLP Research'. The conference runs in hybrid form with both in-person and virtual presentation options, and its tutorial programme is jointly called with AACL-IJCNLP 2026.

Why Attend

EMNLP is where the evaluation and failure-mode work that enterprise NLP teams eventually depend on gets published first, usually a year or two before it reaches a vendor roadmap. The Industry Track is the part to book for: it is explicitly reserved for real deployments — latency and efficiency work, infrastructure for large-scale serving, continuous system maintenance, human-in-the-loop design, offline versus online evaluation, robustness and reliability, and ethics and bias in shipped systems. For a head of AI running retrieval, extraction, summarisation or agent systems in production, that track plus the tutorial day is a far cheaper way to pressure-test an architecture than a failed pilot, and the recruiting pool for senior NLP staff is physically in the room. Budapest also keeps European travel costs well below a US flagship conference.

Event Features

  • Main conference, 24-29 October 2026, at Hungexpo in Budapest
  • 22 main-conference areas from language modelling and LLM agents through to speech and clinical NLP
  • Special Theme Track: 'New Missions for NLP Research'
  • Industry Track for deployed NLP systems, capped at six pages plus unlimited references and appendices
  • System demonstrations track
  • Tutorial programme — three-hour slots, exceptionally six hours, jointly called with AACL-IJCNLP 2026
  • Co-located workshops (schedule still to be confirmed at time of writing)
  • Hybrid attendance with in-person and virtual presentation options for accepted papers
  • Key dates: acceptance notifications 20 August 2026, camera-ready 20 September 2026

What Makes This Unique

  • One of the flagship venues in natural language processing alongside ACL and NAACL, rated top-tier (CORE A*) — this is where the field's empirical results land first.
  • A dedicated Industry Track reserved for real-world deployments: system design, latency and efficiency, infrastructure for large-scale serving, continuous maintenance and human-in-the-loop design, rather than benchmark-chasing.
  • The 2026 special theme track, 'New Missions for NLP Research', covers evaluation methodology, systems-level research, data governance and LLMs as research tools — the questions enterprise teams are also stuck on.
  • Hybrid by design: accepted papers can be presented in person in Budapest or virtually, so a team can send one author and still access the programme.
  • Runs on ACL Rolling Review, so reviewing is decoupled from the venue and authors commit reviewed papers rather than submitting cold.
  • Tutorials are jointly called with AACL-IJCNLP 2026 (Hengqin, China, 6-10 November), creating one proposal pool across two continents.

Pricing Details

Registration rates for EMNLP 2026 are not published — the official registration page reads 'Coming soon' as of 2 August 2026, and no early-bird deadline has been announced. That is consistent with the timeline: acceptance notifications are not due until 20 August 2026 and camera-ready until 20 September, and ACL-family registration usually opens once authors know their status. Note that every accepted paper must be presented at the conference to appear in the proceedings, so at least one author registration per paper is effectively mandatory, and both in-person Budapest attendance and a virtual presentation option are offered. Host-hotel and accommodation details are also still listed as forthcoming.
