There is a decision sitting on your desk right now that will shape your company's AI architecture for the next three to five years. Google just made it considerably more complicated — and more important.
At Google cloud Next '26 this past April, Google rebranded and substantially rebuilt its enterprise AI platform around a single product: Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. It is not just a new name for Vertex AI. It is a direct assault on OpenAI's ChatGPT Work, Microsoft's Copilot and Agent 365, and every enterprise AI contract currently up for renewal.
The enterprise AI platform wars have officially begun. And picking the wrong side of this battle before you fully understand the trade-offs is an expensive mistake.
What Google Gemini Enterprise Actually Is
Before you can make the right call, you need to understand what Google actually built — because "Gemini Enterprise" has been described in a dozen different ways across the tech press, and most of those descriptions miss the strategic point.
Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform is Google Cloud's unified system for building, running, and governing AI agents across a business. Google organized it around four operational pillars:
- Build — access to more than 200 models through Model Garden, including Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemma 4, and third-party open models
- Scale — orchestration and runtime infrastructure for deploying agents at enterprise volume
- Govern — Agent Identity and Agent Gateway, the governance primitives that track which agents are running, what they have access to, and what they did
- Optimize — cost controls, monitoring, and performance tooling for production agent workloads
That governance layer is the part of this announcement that deserves the most executive attention. An OutSystems survey of 1,900 IT leaders in 2026 found that 96% of enterprises are already running AI agents in production, but only 12% can effectively govern them. That is not a typo. Most organizations have agents operating right now with no meaningful identity controls, no audit trails, and no policy enforcement.
Google is betting that governance — not model quality — will determine which platform wins enterprise contracts over the next few years. Looking at that 96/12 gap, it is a reasonable bet.
The Competitive Landscape Has Shifted
The enterprise AI platform market now has four serious contenders, and each has a genuinely different value proposition. Here is an honest breakdown.
Google Gemini Enterprise
Best for: Google Workspace shops, multimodal workloads, cost-sensitive agentic deployments
Pricing: Usage-based at approximately $30/user/month for the enterprise subscription tier. API access to Gemini 3.1 Pro runs $2.00 per million input tokens and $12.00 per million output tokens — among the most competitive rates for a frontier model.
Strengths: Deep Google Workspace integration, strong multimodal capabilities (native audio, video, image), Model Garden breadth for teams that want flexibility across providers, competitive API pricing for high-volume agent workloads.
Weaknesses: usage-based pricing creates budget unpredictability, particularly as agent workloads scale. Identity governance is new infrastructure that organizations have to build trust in. Less mature in the agent orchestration patterns that Microsoft has been building with Azure AI Foundry for 18+ months.
OpenAI ChatGPT Work (GPT-5.6)
Best for: Organizations prioritizing raw model performance for coding, reasoning, and complex agentic tasks
Pricing: ChatGPT Work tiers based on GPT-5.6's Sol/Terra/Luna model family. Sol is the flagship for the hardest problems; Terra balances capability with roughly half Sol's cost; Luna is the high-speed, lower-cost option. Enterprise contracts are priced separately.
Strengths: GPT-5.6 is currently the benchmark leader for complex agent workflows and coding tasks. OpenAI has moved faster on agentic tooling than any other vendor this year, with native computer use, multi-agent orchestration, and reasoning capabilities already integrated into the enterprise product. For organizations with developer productivity as a primary AI use case, GPT-5.6's coding performance is a meaningful advantage.
Weaknesses: No native governance control plane — you are building policy and identity controls on top of the OpenAI API or through middleware. Vendor concentration risk is real: your critical workflows depend on a single provider without strong multi-cloud portability built in.
Microsoft M365 Copilot + Agent 365
Best for: Microsoft 365 shops that need agent governance without rebuilding their identity infrastructure
Pricing: M365 Copilot runs approximately $30/seat/month; Agent 365 adds roughly $15/seat/month once the full control plane is needed. Total cost approaches $45/seat for full agent governance capability, notably higher than Google's tier.
Strengths: The Microsoft platform's decisive advantage is identity. Organizations already on M365 and Azure Entra ID inherit existing policy on day one. Agents automatically fall under the same governance frameworks your security team already manages for human employees. For companies where compliance and governance are non-negotiable on day one, this is a significant advantage that competitors cannot match by just adding new features.
Weaknesses: Cost is the highest of the three major platforms at scale. Azure AI Foundry is capable but complex — it requires meaningful engineering investment to orchestrate well. If your organization is not already deep in the Microsoft ecosystem, the identity advantage evaporates, and you are paying premium pricing without the core benefit.
AWS Bedrock
Best for: AWS-native engineering cultures, multi-model teams that need provider flexibility
Strengths: Model breadth is unmatched — Bedrock lets you route between Claude, Llama, Mistral, Cohere, Amazon Nova, and others through a single API without re-platforming. For organizations that want to avoid vendor lock-in at the model layer, Bedrock is the structurally cleanest option.
Weaknesses: Governance is handled through AWS IAM and per-service controls rather than a unified agent control plane. If your priority is a single pane of glass for agent governance, you will be assembling that from AWS primitives rather than buying it off the shelf.
The Decision Framework Enterprise Leaders Actually Need
Most vendor comparison guides frame this as a features race. That framing leads organizations to make the wrong call. Here is the question that should actually anchor your decision:
Where does agent identity live in your organization today?
If you are deep in Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, the governance case for Microsoft is compelling and real. Your agents can inherit existing policy, your security team does not have to learn new governance tooling, and your compliance team can audit agent actions through frameworks they already understand. The $45/seat cost is high, but the organizational friction of building governance from scratch is higher.
If you are a Google Workspace shop with significant multimodal requirements — processing documents, images, video, or audio at scale — Gemini Enterprise is structurally advantaged. Google's native integration with Workspace data, combined with competitive API pricing, makes it the rational default for organizations already in that ecosystem.
If your primary AI investment is in developer productivity, coding automation, or complex multi-step agentic tasks, OpenAI's GPT-5.6 is still the model performance leader and deserves serious evaluation. The governance gap is real, but for developer tooling use cases, it may be manageable with proper middleware architecture.
If you are AWS-native and your teams have strong engineering capability to assemble a governance stack from cloud primitives, Bedrock's model flexibility is genuinely valuable. This path rewards engineering investment and punishes teams that need turnkey governance out of the box.
What Technical Leaders Need to Evaluate
For CTOs, CIOs, and VP/SVP Engineering teams, there are three technical dimensions that matter beyond the marketing narratives.
Agent identity and audit trails. The 96% deployment / 12% governance gap is a security problem waiting to become an incident report. Before you commit to any platform, map how that platform handles agent identity — can you tell which agent took which action, with what permissions, at what time? Gemini Enterprise's Agent Identity and Agent Gateway are designed to answer this question. Microsoft's integration with Entra ID answers it through existing infrastructure. OpenAI and AWS require you to build the answer yourself.
Multi-model flexibility. The enterprise AI market is not consolidating toward a single winner. Most organizations talking to peers in 2026 are running two or three models across different use cases. Evaluate whether your platform choice forces lock-in at the model layer or preserves optionality. AWS Bedrock is the most flexible. Google's Model Garden offers breadth. Total cost of ownership. The per-seat or usage-based sticker price is not the full picture. Agent workloads at scale generate significant token volume. A pilot that runs 10 agents across 50 processes per day can generate millions of tokens per month within weeks. Model your expected token and tool-call volume before committing to any platform, and ask vendors for enterprise rate cards at your projected scale.
What Business Leaders Need to Know
For CFOs, COOs, CMOs, and business unit leaders, the platform decision has two strategic dimensions that technical teams sometimes underweight.
The switching cost is real and growing. Every workflow, integration, and automation you build on top of one of these platforms increases the cost of migrating to a competitor. The organization that standardizes on Microsoft today because it is convenient may be paying a significant migration premium in three years if Microsoft's pricing or product direction changes. The governance advantage of the Microsoft platform is real, but governance infrastructure is also the hardest thing to migrate. Choose deliberately.
Governance is now a board-level question. The combination of EU AI Act enforcement in 2026 and the emergence of autonomous AI agents means that the governance posture of your AI platform is no longer a technical configuration decision. Which platform you choose determines what audit trails exist, what liability exposure you carry, and how quickly you can demonstrate compliance to regulators or customers who ask. CFOs and CLOs should be in this conversation before a platform contract is signed, not after.
The ROI math matters at the per-process level. Talking to finance leaders across industries this year, the conversations have shifted from "is AI generating ROI" to "which specific processes generate measurable returns and at what cost per task." Your platform choice should support that measurement. The organizations winning on AI ROI are running detailed per-process analytics, not aggregate productivity surveys. Make sure your platform choice gives you the observability to do that math.
How to Actually Decide
Here is the decision tree that cuts through the noise:

Start with your identity infrastructure. Microsoft 365 + Entra ID → Microsoft is default. Google Workspace + Google Cloud → Gemini Enterprise is default. AWS-native + no dominant productivity suite → evaluate Bedrock. Pure OpenAI API shop → ChatGPT Work or evaluate multi-provider.

Google Gemini Enterprise is a serious enterprise platform, not a developer product dressed up with an enterprise license. The governance primitives, the Model Garden breadth, and the Google Workspace integration make it a legitimate option for enterprises that are building real agentic workflows at scale.
But the competitive landscape is genuinely complex in a way that favors deliberate decision-making over fast standardization. The organizations that win in the AI platform wars over the next 18 months will be the ones that chose based on governance, identity infrastructure, and projected workload economics — not based on which vendor had the best demo at the last conference.
Pick wisely. The contract you sign now will still be running your most important AI workflows in 2029.
