Workday Agent Harness
by Workday
Governed runtime for HR and finance AI agents built by Workday, partners or your own team
Workday Agent Harness is the generally available runtime that runs every AI agent on Workday's Trusted Agent Platform, whether Workday, a partner or the customer built it. It is for Workday HR and finance customers who want custom or third-party agents to act on Workday data under the same permissions, approvals and audit trails that govern people.
Workday announced Agent Harness as generally available on October 13, 2026 at Workday Rising in Las Vegas, as part of making its Trusted Agent Platform headless. The harness gives each agent task context drawn from the Workday system of record: the requesting person's identity, role, reporting line, permissions, and the policies and business processes that apply. It governs each action, routes each task to a model chosen for cost and performance, and, per Constellation Research's coverage, runs agents in isolated environments with built-in memory. Customers can pick models from Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, OpenAI and NVIDIA (Nemotron). Developers build on it with Workday's Developer Agent, which turns plain-language requests into agents and apps from Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or the Workday Developer Site, or with their own frameworks; LangChain support is GA and Google ADK support is with design partners. Agents running outside the harness reach Workday through Agent-Ready Tools, Workday's MCP tool catalog, which Reworked counted at 275 read tools and 54 write or delete tools, and through Live Data Query, which lets agents run SQL against live Workday data in Workday Data Cloud. Usage is billed through Workday Flex Credits, a consumption pool, and Workday offers an estimator and an alert that can pause an agent that exceeds its limit. Two harness components are not yet shipping: Agent Context Service (early access late 2026) and Grounded Reasoning, which checks requests against policy before an agent acts (early access early 2027). Workday says more than 11,500 organizations use its software.
CIOs and HR/finance technology leaders at existing Workday customers who are building or buying AI agents that need to read and change Workday data.
Custom and third-party agents act on HR and finance data under Workday's existing permissions, approvals and audit trails, so teams avoid building a separate governance layer around data copies.

Key Features
- ✓System-of-record context
Gives each agent the requester's identity, role, reporting line, permissions and applicable policies from Workday itself, avoiding policy documents or data copies.
- ✓Per-action governance
Applies Workday permissions, approvals and audit trails to every agent action, whether Workday, a partner or the customer built the agent.
- ✓Model routing
Routes each task to a model chosen for cost and performance, with options from Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, OpenAI and NVIDIA Nemotron.
- ✓Agent-Ready Tools (MCP)
Workday's MCP tool catalog lets any MCP-compatible agent read Workday data and take approved actions while existing permissions stay enforced.
- ✓Live Data Query
Lets agents run SQL against live Workday data in Workday Data Cloud, removing the need for custom reports or exported copies.
- ✓Developer Agent and Custom Agents
Builds agents from plain-language requests in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or the Developer Site, or deploys agents built with LangChain.
- ✓Flex Credit spend controls
A credit estimator plus usage alerts that can pause an agent once it exceeds its limit, which helps contain consumption costs.
Capabilities
Use Cases
- •Custom HR service agent
An HR technology team builds an agent that answers policy questions and files requests, and the harness limits it to what each employee is allowed to see.
- •Invoice exception handling from Claude
Finance staff working in Claude approve invoice exceptions through Workday's MCP tools, with the approval chain and audit record kept in Workday.
- •Live workforce analytics
An analytics agent runs SQL through Live Data Query against current headcount and compensation data instead of a nightly export that is already stale.
- •Partner agent onboarding
A CIO brings a partner-built agent into the Workday runtime so it inherits the same permissions and audit trails as Workday's own agents.
- •Cost-aware model selection
A platform team routes routine HR lookups to a cheaper model and harder finance reasoning to a stronger one, tracked against a Flex Credit budget.
Ideal For
Best For
- ✓Running customer-built HR and finance agents with Workday's role-based permissions applied to every action
- ✓Letting MCP-compatible agents such as Claude read and write Workday data through approved tools
- ✓Querying live Workday data with SQL from agents without custom reports or stale extracts
- ✓Choosing different models per task for cost and performance across Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, OpenAI and NVIDIA
- ✓Bringing LangChain-built agents into a governed Workday runtime
Not Ideal For
- ✗Organizations that do not run Workday HCM or Financials, since the harness exists to govern access to Workday data
- ✗Buyers who need a predictable, published price before committing, because Flex Credit rates are not public
- ✗Teams that need policy pre-checks today, since Grounded Reasoning is not expected in early access until early 2027
- ✗Companies wary of deeper vendor lock-in, because agent context, memory and governance all live inside Workday

Market Analysis
Pros
- ✓Generally available now, with agents inheriting Workday permissions, approvals and audit trails
- ✓Broad model choice and LangChain support reduce lock-in at the model layer
- ✓Live SQL access and a large MCP tool catalog let outside agents use current Workday data
Cons
- ✗Flex Credit pricing is unpublished, and coverage flags inconsistent descriptions of how credits work
- ✗Key harness pieces, Agent Context Service and Grounded Reasoning, are still months from early access
- ✗Analysts note no independent customer results or benchmarks accompanied the launch
- ✗Only useful to Workday customers, and it pulls agent governance further into one vendor
Pricing
Flex Credits
Contact for pricing
- ✓Consumption-based credit pool
- ✓Applied across eligible agents and platform features
- ✓Flex Credit Estimator
- ✓Usage alerts that can pause an agent
Agent Harness is billed on a consumption basis through Workday Flex Credits, bought in bulk and drawn down as agents run. Workday publishes no per-credit price, and independent coverage notes that the credit cost of an always-running agent is not public and that Workday's own descriptions of the credit pool differ. It is available only to Workday customers.
