Durable execution runtime that keeps AI agents and backend workflows running through crashes and failures

Freemium · Usage-based · Subscription

Restate is a durable execution runtime that records every step, LLM call and tool call of an application so it can resume after a crash without redoing finished work. It is for engineering teams building long-running AI agents, workflows and distributed backends who would otherwise write their own retry, state and recovery code.

  • •Multi-agent routing
  • •Reliable transactional workflows

Ideal For

Best For

  • ✓Making long-running AI agent loops survive crashes, deploys and LLM API timeouts
  • ✓Human-in-the-loop agent approvals that may wait hours or days before resuming
  • ✓Payment, order and onboarding workflows that need exactly-once side effects
  • ✓Serverless backends on platforms like Vercel, Cloudflare or AWS Lambda that need durable state
  • ✓Teams that want a self-hostable alternative to Temporal with a single-binary server

Not Ideal For

  • ✗Teams that want durability as a library inside an existing Postgres app; DBOS-style tools avoid running a separate Restate server
  • ✗Organisations whose policy forbids Business Source License software, or vendors wanting to resell Restate as a managed service, which the BSL prohibits
  • ✗Buyers who rank maturity above everything; practitioners on Hacker News describe Temporal as more battle-tested

Market Analysis

Developer-firstSource-availableAgent infrastructure

Pros

  • ✓Light to operate: one binary, no external database, clusterable for high availability
  • ✓SDKs in six languages plus first-party guides for the main agent frameworks
  • ✓Transparent, published cloud pricing with a usable free tier
  • ✓Practitioners on Hacker News praise the TypeScript SDK and its fit with serverless platforms

Cons

  • ✗Adopting it means coupling to Restate's execution model and keeping discipline around deterministic replay, as one practitioner put it
  • ✗Needs a separate Restate server, so existing apps may require rearchitecting versus library-only tools like DBOS
  • ✗Younger and less battle-tested than Temporal, by practitioners' own account
  • ✗The BSL 1.1 licence is source-available rather than OSI open source and bars offering it as a managed service

Restate Cloud is metered by durable actions (invocations, steps, sleeps, RPC calls, completions); state reads and writes are free. Overage is $25 per million actions up to 100M, then $10 per million. A HIPAA BAA costs $300/month extra on Business and multi-AZ $200/month. Self-hosting is free under the BSL. Plan figures come from a third-party pricing summary dated October 8, 2026, because the vendor pricing page did not render for us; confirm before buying.

Restate is a durable execution runtime that records every step, LLM call and tool call of an application so it can resume after a crash without redoing finished work. It is for engineering teams building long-running AI agents, workflows and distributed backends who would otherwise write their own retry, state and recovery code.

Restate is a durable execution platform built by Restate GmbH in Berlin, a company founded in 2024 by the team that created Apache Flink, including CEO Stephan Ewen, Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, with former Stripe and Meta executive Ahmed Forghal. The server is a single binary built on its own distributed log and event-driven orchestrator, so it needs no external database; clustering the same binary gives high availability. Developers write ordinary handlers with SDKs for TypeScript, Java and Kotlin, Python, Go and Rust, and Restate journals each step so a retry resumes where the last attempt stopped. It adds exactly-once service-to-service calls, durable timers and promises, and isolated key-value state per entity through what it calls virtual objects. For AI agents, the docs show LLM and tool calls wrapped in durable steps, multi-turn sessions keyed by ID, human-in-the-loop approvals that survive restarts, multi-agent handoffs, and controls to pause, cancel or roll back a stuck agent, with integrations for the Vercel AI SDK, OpenAI Agents SDK, Google ADK, Pydantic AI and LangChain. Replit uses Restate for durable orchestration in the current Replit Agent, and the company says hundreds of firms run it, including Fortune 500 companies. The server is licensed under the Business Source License 1.1, which converts to Apache 2.0 after four years. Restate Cloud offers a free tier and paid plans metered by durable actions, plus a Bring Your Own Cloud option. In September 2026 Restate raised a $20M Series A led by Singular, bringing total funding to $27M, and opened a San Francisco commercial hub. Its main competitor is Temporal.

Ideal Buyer

Platform and backend engineering leads shipping long-running AI agents or multi-step workflows who are tired of hand-rolling retries, queues and state recovery.

Key Benefit

Agents and workflows resume exactly where they failed, without repeating completed LLM calls or side effects.

Key Features

  • ✓
    Durable execution journal

Records each completed step so a retried handler resumes from its last checkpoint instead of re-running LLM calls or side effects.

  • ✓
    Durable agent sessions

Keys multi-turn agent sessions by ID with built-in concurrency control, so conversations persist across crashes and scale to thousands of sessions.

  • ✓
    Human-in-the-loop approvals

Durable promises let an agent pause for a human decision and resume when it arrives, even after the process restarts.

  • ✓
    Virtual objects with state

Gives each entity isolated key-value state stored with execution progress, removing the need for a separate database for agent memory.

  • ✓
    Exactly-once messaging and timers

Request-response, one-way and scheduled calls between services are delivered exactly once, with durable timers that survive restarts.

  • ✓
    Agent framework integrations

Works with Vercel AI SDK, OpenAI Agents SDK, Google ADK, Pydantic AI and LangChain, or any LLM SDK wrapped in durable steps.

  • ✓
    Built-in observability and control

A UI and CLI show step-by-step execution journals with automatic OpenTelemetry traces, and let operators pause, cancel, kill or roll back executions.

✓agent orchestration

Use Cases

  • •
    Coding agent orchestration

Replit uses Restate to orchestrate Replit Agent so long-running coding sessions keep their progress through failures and infrastructure faults.

  • •
    Approval-gated agent actions

An enterprise agent drafts a refund or contract change, waits durably for a manager's approval, then executes once without duplicating the action.

  • •
    Multi-agent routing

A support system hands tasks between specialist agents, with each routing decision persisted so a crash never loses or repeats a handoff.

  • •
    Reliable transactional workflows

A fintech runs payment and onboarding flows as durable workflows, guaranteeing exactly-once side effects across several downstream services.
