LexisNexis legal AI workspace with agentic research, drafting and 300+ workflows grounded in Shepard's citations
Lexis+ with Protégé is LexisNexis's legal AI platform that combines legal research, drafting, document analysis and agentic workflows grounded in the Lexis corpus and Shepard's Citations. It is for law firms and corporate legal departments already doing research on Lexis who want AI that cites authority they can verify.
Lexis+ with Protégé is the LexisNexis legal AI platform that replaced Lexis+ AI, which the company now calls its first-generation AI experience. It reached general availability in the United States on February 24, 2026 after a commercial preview in January, with a global rollout planned through 2026. The product combines conversational legal research, drafting of motions, briefs, complaints and contracts, and document upload for summarisation and issue spotting with a library of more than 300 configurable workflows across litigation and transactional work, plus a no-code Custom Workflow Builder and a white-glove workflow service. Answers are grounded in a LexisNexis knowledge graph the company describes as more than 200 billion documents with about 4 million added daily, and citations are checked against Shepard's. Protégé General AI, released in December 2025, runs an agentic retrieval setup with orchestrator, legal research, web search and customer-document agents and offers models from Anthropic and OpenAI with automatic Best Fit selection. In August 2026 LexisNexis added the Legal Intelligence Engine, an agentic harness that keeps context across steps, picks tools such as Lex Machina judicial analytics and Intelligize SEC data, combines research and drafting in a single request, exports to Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and walls context off by matter so one client's work cannot leak into another's. Pricing is quote-based. It competes most directly with Thomson Reuters Westlaw and CoCounsel, Harvey and Vincent AI.
A litigation or knowledge-management leader at a mid-size or large law firm, or a corporate legal department, that already licenses Lexis research and wants AI output tied to citable authority.
Research and first-draft documents come back in one request with Shepard's-checked citations attached, which cuts the separate verification pass lawyers otherwise run on AI output.

Key Features
- ✓Legal Intelligence Engine
An agentic harness added in August 2026 that keeps context across steps and chooses the right tool, so one prompt can research the law and draft the client document.
- ✓Shepard's citation checking
AI output links to citations validated against Shepard's, reducing the manual step of confirming that cited authority is still good law.
- ✓300+ prebuilt workflows
Configurable litigation, transactional and general workflows that package multi-step legal tasks behind a single conversational prompt.
- ✓Custom Workflow Builder
A no-code builder for firms to encode their own multi-step processes, with a white-glove service available for implementation help.
- ✓Multi-model agentic retrieval
Orchestrator, research, web and document agents run on models from Anthropic and OpenAI with automatic Best Fit model selection.
- ✓Integrated analytics data
Pulls Lex Machina judicial history and Intelligize SEC filings into answers alongside the core Lexis corpus.
- ✓Matter-walled context and Office export
Context is separated by matter to prevent cross-client leakage, and output exports directly to Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Capabilities
Use Cases
- •Research-to-draft in one request
A lawyer asks for the current law on an issue plus a client memo, and the engine researches and drafts together with linked citations.
- •Motion and brief drafting
Litigators generate first drafts of motions, briefs and complaints grounded in Lexis case law, then refine them in Word.
- •Document review and issue spotting
Teams upload contracts or discovery documents for summaries and flagged issues instead of reading every page first.
- •Judge and opposing-counsel analysis
Litigation teams pull Lex Machina judicial history into the same workflow to shape strategy before filing.
- •Firm-specific workflow automation
Knowledge-management teams encode standard firm processes in the Custom Workflow Builder so associates run them consistently.
Ideal For
Best For
- ✓Litigation teams drafting motions and briefs that must cite verified case law
- ✓Firms already on Lexis+ that want AI layered onto the research content they pay for
- ✓State appellate and secondary-source research, where independent reviewers rate Lexis coverage strongly
- ✓Matter-scoped research and drafting where client context must stay separated
Not Ideal For
- ✗Solo practitioners and small firms under about 15 lawyers, which one independent review says get poor value from quote-based enterprise pricing
- ✗Contract-heavy in-house teams, since reviewers describe its contract automation as thin compared with dedicated CLM tools
- ✗Engineering teams that need programmatic access, because there is no public API
Deployment
Market Analysis
Pros
- ✓Shepard's verification is built into the output, which independent reviewers rank as its main strength
- ✓Deep federal and state case law and treatise coverage plus Lex Machina analytics on 8,000+ federal judges
- ✓Research and drafting run in one agentic request since the August 2026 Legal Intelligence Engine update
- ✓Choice of models from Anthropic and OpenAI rather than lock-in to a single provider
Cons
- ✗A Stanford and Yale study measured roughly a 17% hallucination rate on the predecessor Lexis+ AI, so 'hallucination-free' citation claims are overstated and verification is still required
- ✗No published pricing and an enterprise procurement cycle of 60 to 90 days, per an independent 2026 review
- ✗No public API, and contract automation is described as thin
- ✗Performance issues were reported through 2025 on the earlier Lexis+ AI generation

LexisNexis publishes no per-seat price; Lawyerist lists it as contact vendor and flags it as expensive and an add-on product. One independent 2026 review cites third-party estimates of $128 to $494 per user per month at standard tiers, calls them directional only, and notes annual escalators, three-year terms and a 60 to 90 day procurement cycle.
