About This Event

ICAIL 2027, the 22nd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law, is an in-person research conference at the Juridicum, the University of Vienna's Faculty of Law, in Vienna, Austria, from 5 to 9 July 2027. It is the official conference of the International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law (IAAIL), runs in cooperation with ACM, and marks 40 years of a series that began in 1987. The call for papers is organised in four groups: foundations and computational legal theory; legal data science, information retrieval and generative AI; technical governance, legal risk analysis and normative alignment; and legal technologies. It takes long papers (10 pages), short papers (5 pages) and 2-page demonstrations. The week also includes workshops and tutorials, the Trevor Bench-Capon Doctoral Consortium and the Karl Branting Industry Meeting. Paper submissions are due 28 January 2027.

Who Should Attend

  • AI and law researchers
  • Legal technologists and legal engineers
  • General counsel and legal operations leaders
  • AI governance and compliance leads
  • NLP and information retrieval engineers
  • Regulators and public-sector digital-government teams
  • PhD students in AI and law

Why Attend

For a general counsel, chief compliance officer or CIO deploying generative AI on contracts, filings or regulated decisions, ICAIL is where the evaluation and verification methods for legal AI are published and argued over first. The 2027 call puts regulatory compliance engineering, legal risk assessment, auditability and guardrails next to legal NLP and retrieval. Attending helps a team judge which legal-AI vendor claims hold up and pick an approach for machine-readable regulation (Rules as Code). The industry meeting is also a place to recruit researchers who work on accountable automated decision-making.

Event Features

  • Track group 1: Foundations, knowledge representation and computational legal theory (logic and argumentation, normative modelling, rule- and case-based reasoning, neuro-symbolic integration, ontologies)
  • Track group 2: Legal data science, information retrieval and generative AI (legal NLP, argument mining, predictive analytics, generative AI evaluation and verification)
  • Track group 3: Technical governance, legal risk analysis and normative alignment (regulatory compliance engineering, algorithmic fairness, law-based AI safety and guardrails, auditability)
  • Track group 4: Legal technologies (hybrid intelligence workflows, access to justice, Rules as Code and e-government, dispute resolution, smart contracts, legal forensics and education)
  • Trevor Bench-Capon Doctoral Consortium
  • Karl Branting Industry Meeting
  • Workshops and tutorials (proposals due 11 December 2026)
  • Long papers (10 pp), short papers (5 pp) and demonstration extended abstracts (2 pp)

What Makes This Unique

  • The longest-running research venue for AI and law (since 1987) and the official conference of IAAIL; 2027 is its 40th-anniversary edition
  • The call for papers covers technical governance directly: regulatory compliance engineering, legal risk assessment, auditability and law-based AI safety and alignment
  • Hosted inside a law faculty (the University of Vienna's Juridicum), so the audience mixes legal scholars and practitioners with computer scientists
  • The Karl Branting Industry Meeting gives practitioners their own track next to the research programme and the doctoral consortium
