About This Event

CHIIR 2027, the ACM SIGIR Conference on Human Information Interaction and Retrieval, takes place 7-11 March 2027 at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in Berlin, Germany. CHIIR — pronounced 'cheer' — is SIGIR's user-centered counterpart to the main information retrieval conference: where SIGIR asks whether a ranking algorithm is better, CHIIR asks whether a person found what they needed, understood it and could act on it. Its scope covers information seeking behaviour, novel interaction paradigms, search interfaces, and evaluation methods drawn from sociology, education, psychology and human-computer interaction as well as computer science. The 2027 edition is chaired by Maria Gäde and Vivien Petras of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin with Toine Bogers and Frans van der Sluis of Copenhagen, and is held strictly in person to keep the community small and the discussion real.

Why Attend

Every enterprise now runs at least one retrieval-augmented system, and almost none of them can say whether it is helping. CHIIR is the field that answers that: how to instrument information-seeking, how to design an evaluation that survives scrutiny, what actually happens when a user is handed a synthesised answer instead of a ranked list. A search, knowledge-management or AI-product leader leaves with evaluation methodology they can apply to an internal assistant on Monday, a read on how conversational retrieval changes user behaviour, and contact with the European research groups doing this work.

Event Features

  • Full and perspective papers track — abstracts 8 October 2026, papers 15 October 2026
  • Short papers, demos, design papers, resource papers and industry papers track
  • Tutorials and workshops programme
  • Doctoral consortium
  • Perspective papers on key challenges and theoretical or methodological issues
  • Both quantitative and qualitative research methods explicitly in scope

What Makes This Unique

  • The venue that publishes how people actually behave with search systems — the evidence base for evaluating a RAG or AI-answer product on something other than a retrieval benchmark
  • Deliberately in-person only: 'at least one author of each accepted paper must register and present the work in person', which keeps it a working community rather than a broadcast
  • Draws method from sociology, psychology and education alongside computer science, so the evaluation designs are more rigorous than the A/B tests most product teams run
  • Carries a dedicated industry papers track alongside the academic ones, on the same deadline as short papers and demos
  • Hosted by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin's information science department, one of Europe's strongest, rather than in a rented convention centre
