Hugging Face Model Context Protocol (MCP) Course
by Hugging Face (with Anthropic)
A free, certificate-bearing MCP course that ends with a deployed application, not a toy.
Overview
This is Hugging Face's free MCP course, built in partnership with Anthropic and described as taking a learner from beginner to informed on the protocol. It is structured as five units. Unit 0 is onboarding: the accounts, tooling and platforms you need set up before you write anything. Unit 1 covers MCP fundamentals, architecture and core concepts — the components and the basic use cases. Unit 2 is an end-to-end use case where you build a shareable MCP application. Unit 3 is a deployed use case, building MCP applications on the Hugging Face ecosystem rather than only running them locally, which is the step that separates this course from most MCP tutorials. Unit 4 holds bonus units contributed around partner libraries and services. Each chapter is designed to be completed in about a week at three to four hours of work, so the whole course is roughly twelve to sixteen hours. There are two free certificates: a Fundamentals certificate for completing Unit 1, and a Completion certificate for finishing Units 2 and 3. Stated prerequisites are a basic understanding of AI and LLMs, familiarity with software development and APIs, and experience with at least one programming language — Python or TypeScript in practice. The authors are Ben Burtenshaw, a machine learning engineer at Hugging Face, and Alex Notov, technical partner enablement lead at Anthropic. The course material is developed openly in the huggingface/mcp-course repository (Apache-2.0, roughly 910 stars and 259 forks), so the units, projects and quizzes can be read, forked or corrected directly.
