Onboarding and compliance workflows are seeing gains in regulated industries. Enterprises are using AI to speed up customer onboarding (reducing 6-8 week timelines to 3-4 weeks), automate compliance screening, and flag risk exceptions faster. The key enabler: organizations in these sectors had already invested in identity resolution, data lineage, and governance controls for regulatory reasons. AI inherits those capabilities rather than requiring net-new data infrastructure.

Workflow automation for repetitive research tasks is delivering immediate productivity wins. Teams in finance, legal, procurement, and operations are using AI to summarize documents, extract structured data from unstructured sources, and synthesize large volumes of information. Because these use cases are largely read-only (AI assists with research, humans make final decisions), they tolerate lower data quality and don't require deep integration into transactional systems.

Risk analysis and supplier evaluation workflows are improving decision quality. Enterprises are using AI to process third-party risk assessments, evaluate supplier compliance, and monitor vendor performance against contractual obligations. The ROI shows up as faster reviews (40-50% time savings), more consistent evaluation criteria, and earlier identification of risk signals. Success here depends on having structured vendor data, compliance databases, and procurement systems with APIs that AI can query.

The Agentic AI Challenge: Autonomy Requires Trust

As enterprises move from copilots to more autonomous agentic workflows, data readiness becomes even more critical. Agentic AI systems don't just assist—they execute portions of workflows, coordinate across systems, and make decisions with limited human oversight.

Most enterprise deployments today are narrowly scoped agents operating under supervised autonomy. Humans remain involved in approvals, oversight, and exception handling. Agents execute specific tasks—research, data synthesis, workflow orchestration—while decision authority stays with people. This model works because agents operate within clearly defined boundaries where data quality issues can be caught and corrected.

But the near-term pattern is expanding fast. Over the next 12-24 months, enterprises expect agents to coordinate work across customers, suppliers, partners, employees, and internal systems. That means agents will need access to data that spans organizational boundaries, crosses jurisdictional lines, and integrates systems that were never designed to interoperate. Without trusted, governed data foundations, these multi-agent workflows become operationally risky.

The data challenge is particularly acute in regulated industries. Banking, insurance, healthcare, and financial services need AI outputs that are auditable, explainable, and demonstrably compliant. If an AI agent approves a loan, denies a claim, or flags a transaction for review, regulators need to see the data lineage, decision logic, and audit trail. Legacy data architectures built for batch reporting can't support this level of real-time governance.

What Enterprise Leaders Should Prioritize

For organizations currently seeing early ROI but struggling to scale, the path forward isn't more AI investment—it's data infrastructure that can support production-grade AI.

Invest in identity resolution and data interoperability. AI systems need to understand that the "John Smith" in Salesforce, the "J. Without consistent identity resolution, AI produces conflicting recommendations, duplicates work, or misses critical context. This requires master data management, entity resolution systems, and data governance frameworks that most enterprises have deferred.

Build real-time data access with governance controls. Moving from batch analytics to real-time AI means rearchitecting data pipelines to support continuous access while maintaining security, privacy, and compliance controls. This isn't just infrastructure—it's policy, process, and tooling that lets AI query production systems safely. Organizations that succeed here invest in data catalogs, access governance platforms, and API-first architectures that expose data in controlled, auditable ways.

Establish data quality monitoring and validation. AI systems amplify the impact of data quality issues. A 5% error rate in a reporting dashboard is annoying; the same error rate in an AI agent approving vendor contracts is a compliance disaster. Enterprises need continuous data quality monitoring, automated validation checks, and circuit breakers that stop AI workflows when data integrity drops below acceptable thresholds.

Address jurisdictional and sovereignty requirements early. For global enterprises, data residency and sovereignty aren't optional—they're table stakes. AI systems that move data across borders or mix customer information from different regions create regulatory exposure that can pause deals, block partnerships, or trigger audits. The fix: architect AI systems with data sovereignty built in, not bolted on later. This means region-specific data stores, jurisdiction-aware access controls, and AI workflows that respect geographic boundaries.

Focus hiring on data + AI integration expertise. The skills gap isn't just ML engineers—it's people who can connect AI to enterprise systems safely and reliably. This includes data architects who understand AI access patterns, integration engineers who can build production-grade connectors, and governance specialists who can design compliance-ready data pipelines. Organizations seeing the most success are building cross-functional teams that combine AI expertise with deep enterprise data knowledge.

The Bottom Line for Enterprise Leaders

The D&B survey reveals a critical inflection point. Enterprises have proven that AI works in controlled environments and delivers measurable ROI in targeted use cases. The next phase—scaling AI to production-grade workflows that touch core business operations—depends far more on data infrastructure than on model selection.

For CIOs and CTOs: Data readiness is now the highest-priority AI infrastructure investment. More capable models won't fix broken data pipelines, inconsistent identity resolution, or governance gaps that block production deployment. Prioritize data interoperability, quality monitoring, and real-time access controls over expanding model deployments.

For CFOs and business leaders: The ROI math shifts at scale. Early AI wins cost relatively little and deliver 10-20% productivity gains in isolated workflows. Scaling to mission-critical operations requires data infrastructure investments that are expensive and time-consuming but necessary. Budget for data governance, integration work, and compliance controls as core components of AI strategy, not afterthoughts.

For all enterprise leaders: The organizations that win in AI won't be those with the most advanced models. They'll be the ones with trusted, governed, interoperable data that AI systems can reliably consume and act on. That's not a technology problem—it's a strategic decision about where to invest and what infrastructure matters most.
